Billa Slovakia is a Slovak subsidiary of Austrian Billa, member of German Rewe Group. They are planning to build a network of 100 supermarkets before the end of 2005. Currently there are 22 supermarkets in Slovakia. Besides the dominant administrative centres of the country, Billa would like to erect an outlet in each of 78 district towns.

In December 2000 the Government of Slovakia agreed to sell a stake of 87.18% in the share capital of Slovenská sporitelna, a.s. (SLSP aka The Slovak Savings Bank), the largest bank of the Slovak Republic, to Erste Bank der österreichischen Sparkassen AG ("Erste Bank") of Austria. The agreement follows a competitive bidding process where Erste Bank was selected from among three contenders. Erste Bank will pay the National Property Fund of the Slovak Republic €425 million (Sk18.4 billion) for a controlling 87.18% equity stake in SLSP. The transaction values SLSP at 1.78 times the estimated adjusted book value of SLSP's equity at 31.12.2000 in accordance with International Accounting Standards (IAS).

On a price per customer basis the acquisition of a customer base of 1.8 million in the Slovak Republic is valued at approximately €271 per customer, which is below the €291 per customer that Erste Bank paid when it acquired the 52% stake in Ceská sporitelna (based on the final purchase price of €530 million). After the formal signing of the contracts which is expected for early January 2001, Erste Bank expects to appoint one new member to SLSP's management board and one new member to the supervisory board of the bank.

Austrian Bank Raiffeisen Zentralbank Österreich AG (Raiffeisen Banking Group) aquired a majority stake in Tatra Banka, a.s., one of the most important Slovakia's banks.

In December 1998 OMV Slovensko s.r.o., Bratislava, a 100% subsidiary of Austrian OMV AG, acquired the only one BP gas station in Slovakia (and at the same time the Czech OMV acquired all 14 stations from BP). After the deal the OMV chain will have 50 stations in Slovakia with 17% market share (and 97 stations in Czechia with 9%).
