Tesco Plc is the biggest retail chain in Great Britain, currently operating over 830 units throughout the world. The company owns 38 hypermarkets and plans to extend its hypermarket network to 130 in 2001. Tesco entered the Slovak market in April 1996 by the acquisition of K-Mart's network of 13 department stores in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The opening of the first Tesco hypermarkets in Nitra and Kosice in 1999 indicated the beginning of an expected invasion of retail chains in Slovakia. Later Tesco opened also hypermarkets in Banska Bystrica and Bratislava, and it is preparing to open the biggest so far in Trnava.

Boxperfect, a company from Essex (UK), launched production in its new plant in the village of Kojšov, near Gelnica, manufacturing gift and presentation boxes for the retail trade (June 2011).
