Simply call it Euro

Fri 17 Sep 04, 18:11    RSI

The European Central Bank chairman Jean-Claude Trichet raised the issue of member states treating the name “euro” as they wish. Trichet pointed out that the name "euro" is written differently in different parts of the EU. For example, in Slovenia it is written "evro", in Latvia "eiro", and in Slovakia it is declined. None of these new EU members have yet adopted the currency. In fact, rules for writing euro on banknotes were settled by EU leaders in 1997. It should be "euro" in all EU languages except Greek due to its different alphabet.

Klara Kalamanova, a linguist at the Ludovit Stur Language Institute in Bratislava says that the proper use of Slovak language will suffer by following EU rules . Using the word without declining it would be contradictory to Slovak grammar. However, linguists have already faced the idea of not declining the names of medicines. Kalamanova thinks Slovakia should ignore Brussels on this issue. "These are just bureaucratic suggestions that don't respect differences among languages," she added.
