Eyes on the dangerous Hungarian paprika

Thu 04 Nov 04, 14:43    RSI

On Wednesday last week, Hungary ordered retailers to remove from their stores all products containing paprika, as the health ministry's checks discovered the presence of aflatoxin in paprika stored in public warehouses. According to a representative from the Unimik company that imports paprika into Slovakia, as much as 95 percent of all paprika on the Slovak market comes from Hungary. The Regional Veterinary and Food Administration in Kosice has no official information about paprika containing dangerous substances supposedly imported from Hungary to Slovakia. "We are going to deal with this case immediately," stated their head on Thursday. He thinks that aflatoxin, a dangerous substance that can damage the liver and may cause cancer, found last week in paprika in Hungary, might also be present in other products, such as spiced peanuts.
