Dzurinda is satisfied with coalition success, sad over low turnout

Tue 29 Nov 05, 08:29    RSI

Leader of the governing coalition Prime Minister Mikulas Dzurinda is satisfied with the future composition of regional parliaments, but less content with low attendance in the regional elections on Saturday. He underscored that in a democratic society high election attendance is very important in order to achieve representative results. Dzurinda is glad that his Slovak Democratic and Christian Union has twice as many deputies in regional parliaments than in the previous race. Moreover, four candidates from coalitions of which the SDKU was a member made it to the election runoffs for county government heads. He underscored that parties of the ruling coalition were most successful when they teamed up. Dzurinda thinks it will be necessary to deal with this low attendance once the situation calms down after the elections; he is calling for measures to improve the situation. The prime minister thinks it is still necessary to stress the importance of county parliaments for day to day life.
