Slovak is a Slavic language like Czech, Russian, Polish, Bulgarian,
Serbo-Croatian, Ukrainian, Belarusian or Slovene. It is officially
spoken in Slovakia and by Slovak minorities abroad (mostly in the Czech Republic,
Yugoslavia, USA, Canada, Australia and other countries).
Slovak is written in the Roman (Latin) alphabet, but uses several special
accents, which change the pronounciation of a specific letter. In general,
all letters are pronounced as they are written.
The official Slovak written language has been adopted in 1843 by
Ludovit Stur on the base of the dialect spoken in Central Slovakia.
Due to natural cultural influence of neighboring nations, the
language spoken in frontier regions shade into Czech, Ruthenian and
Polish.
However, most dialects of Slovak are mutually comprehensible, for there
are no sharp linguistic frontiers.
